Ten Most Iconic Horror Villains

As Millie Loredo grew up watching horror films, the villains in the films changed shape and form, but one thing remained the same: they were all terrifying. They each had a motive as well as their own unique method of horror.

When Millie decided to write her own horror film, Sorrow, she had to figure out what kind of villain she wanted to create. The scariest villains are the ones that have nothing to lose, and Millie wanted to create that kind of villain with a twist.

Sorrow follows the story of Mila Sweeney, a forensic psychologist who is kidnapped and tortured by two deranged serial killers. However, she manages to escape and exact revenge against her captors.

Below is a list of the most iconic horror film villains that have haunted and terrorized horror fans for decades. Keep reading to find out which villains have inspired Millie!

1. Leatherface – The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Director Tobe Hooper introduced the world to Leatherface in 1974 in his directorial debut, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Leatherface was a member of a cannibalistic family that preyed on passersby.

2. Jason Vorhees – Friday the 13th

Jason Voorhees drowned at Camp Crystal Lake when he was a young boy thanks to a neglectful camp staff. He took his revenge on campers for twelve films, beginning with Friday the 13th in 1980.

3. Michael Myers – Halloween

Thanks to Michael Myers, Jamie Lee Curtis became the “Scream Queen” of the 80s after facing off against the serial killer in the original 1978 Halloween. Michael Myers stabbed his older sister to death when he was six years old, and fifteen years later escaped a psychiatric hospital to satisfy his urge to kill.

4. Ghostface – Scream

Master of Horror Wes Craven directed the original Scream in 1996, which brought to life the Ghostface killer. The scariest thing about Ghostface is that it’s not just one killer but whoever decides to don the mask to exact revenge.

5. Freddy Krueger – A Nightmare on Elm Street

Wes Craven also introduced the world to the child murderer named Freddy Krueger who fell victim to vigilante justice and was burned to death. He exacts his revenge through dreams, slashing victims with his claws and making their worst nightmares a reality.

6. Chucky – Child’s Play

Charles Lee Ray, better known as Chucky, is a serial killer who inhabits a doll and subsequently tries to transfer his soul to a human body. He came to life in three Child’s Play films and three Chucky films.

7. Leprechaun – Leprechaun

This Leprechaun is much too obsessed with his gold. When it is stolen from him, he does whatever it takes to get every last piece back. He started terrorizing audiences in 1993 and spawned three more sequels.

8. Pennywise – It

In this miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s It, Pennywise is a clown who terrorizes a group of friends as children and as adults. The scariest thing about Pennywise is that he takes the form of what is most frightening to each one of them.

9. Jigsaw – Saw

Some would argue that Jigsaw is an unlikely hero, appearing to those who are not appreciating their life in order to make them fight to keep it. Anyone who sees Jigsaw is in for an unpleasant surprise.

10. The Creeper – Jeepers Creepers

Victor Salva introduced the world to The Creeper in 2001. He is an ancient creature who hunts every twenty-third spring for 23 days to feed on human body parts and organs which become parts of his own body.
