The biggest problem most independent filmmakers face is funding for their passion projects. Screenwriters and directors can have the greatest ideas and visions for a film, but without enough money required, there is no way to get the film produced.
Millie Loredo knows this firsthand having had to raise the funds to produce and shoot her debut indie horror film Sorrow. The film follows the story of Mila Sweeney, a forensic psychologist who is kidnapped and tortured by two deranged serial killers. However, she manages to escape and exact revenge against her captors. Millie and producer Dillon Bowen took to YouTube to implore horror fans online to donate and then took to finding private investors for the film.
Over the years, indie films have gained popularity, but finding the funds to create these films is still a struggle. Below is a list of films like Sorrow that were produced and filmed on a budget.* Keep reading to find out which classic indie films were created for less than $1 million!

The reviews keep rolling in for Sorrow, and this week, Reel Bloody Reviews calls the film a “brave and enthusiastic” effort by writer and director Millie Loredo. Viewers will soon be able to judge for themselves when the film premieres in Houston, Texas this week.
Modern Horrors is another website devoted to the review and exposure of horror films, and reviewer Grey watched screenwriter Millie Loredo’s directorial debut and praised her work.
“As Loredo’s first feature, Sorrow looks fantastic and held my attention throughout,” he said. “I hope to see more from Loredo in the future, hopefully more firmly entrenched in our genre.”
Loredo’s film follows the story of Mila Sweeney, a forensic pathologist who is kidnapped and tortured by two deranged serial killers by the names of Dale Rogers and Hersey Igor. However, she manages to escape and exacts her own personal form of vengeance against her captors.
Reel Bloody Reviews writer Bruce praised Loredo’s directorial debut saying Sorrow is “one of the reasons I love revenge films.” According to Bruce, the film may achieve a horror fan cult following now that it has been released in theaters, on DVD and online.
One thing both reviewers agreed on was that the work of Mary Etuk for her performance as one half of the film’s two serial killers, Hersey Igor, was stellar. Modern Horrors called Etuk’s performance “electric” and “mesmerizing,” and Grey said he wished there had been more of Etuk in the film. Bruce agreed and applauded Etuk’s performance.

Additionally, Grey said the diverse cast with actors and actresses of varying ethnicities helped to give the film a real feel, which is what Loredo was hoping to achieve. “I was going for a truthful approach, to get as close to reality as possible,” she said.
“The vision [Loredo] had for her story shone brightly the entire way through,” Bruce said, adding that he is sure horror film fans will see more of Loredo in the future. Similarly, Grey said the film as a whole, “owing much to the era of grindhouse thrillers of the 70s,” will be a treat for fans of horror films everywhere.

Studies show that horror films are predominantly viewed by Latino audiences. There is something about a zombie, vampire or ghost flick that causes Latinos to flock to the movie theaters. It is no surprise then that writer and director Millie Loredo is making her directorial debut with indie horror film Sorrow.
Loredo decided to feature a diverse cast in her film, and Houston-born Latina Vannessa Vasquez takes the lead as Mila Sweeney. As much as Latinos enjoy horror films, though, there aren’t many that feature Latinos in the cast. Vannessa Vasquez currently stars as Camila on Hulu Network’s original series “East Los High,” a drama featuring an all Latino cast centered on the lives of teenagers growing up in East Los Angeles. Critics have praised Vasquez’s performance, so much so that she has earned a Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Performer in a New Approaches Drama Series.
Vasquez also stars in the indie horror film Sorrow as Mila Sweeney, a forensic psychologist who is kidnapped by two deranged serial killers, played by Eric Martinez and Mary Etuk. Mila manages to escape and exacts revenge against her captors.
Vasquez had planned to attend the screening tour for Sorrow with director Millie Loredo and actor Eric Martinez, but she will have to miss a few screenings to attend the Daytime Emmys. Etuk will be attending the screening tour in place of Vasquez.
“We are so proud of her,” said Loredo. “We will be cheering her on from the road!”
“East Los High” has been applauded for being Hulu Network’s first and only series with a cast comprised entirely of Latinos, and it tells of the teenagers’ lives from the point of view of the American Latino. The show tackles the issues of teen drug use, sex and shootings, among many other difficult themes.
Since her debut in the first season of the show, Vasquez has landed the lead in several films, including Sorrow, Misfire and Narca. She said it is her hard work and commitment to character that has gotten her noticed.
“I really work hard at what I do, and I think directors see that and other people start noticing that,” Vasquez said. “When you work with people on set and they see you work, they see how much you dive into character.”
Loredo admires Vasquez’s work and said she couldn’t find anyone more perfect for the role of Mila Sweeney, which required a lot of intensity. In fact, filming became so realistic and extreme for Vasquez she had to take a day off “to reset.”
“East Los High” is currently filming its third season, which will premiere on the Hulu Network this fall. The first two seasons are currently available to stream on Hulu. The series itself has been nominated for Outstanding New Approaches Drama Series and Vasquez’s co-star Daniella Vega was also nominated for Outstanding Performer in a New Approaches Drama Series.
The winners will be announced during the 42nd Daytime Emmy Awards ceremony on Sunday, April 26. We wish Vannessa the best of luck!
